Ecosystems in Action! A Multidisciplinary Project that Promotes English and Science

The students of 4th grade de Lope de Vega International School have successfully completed the project “Ecosystems in Action”, a multidisciplinary initiative that integrates content from English, Science and Mathematics, and which has allowed the practical development of the four English skills: Speaking, Listening, Reading and Writing.

Research and critical thinking: first steps of the project

The activity began with a research phase on different ecosystems. The students explored a wide variety of habitats—from rainforests to deserts and oceans—using diverse sources of information. During this process, they worked on the reading comprehension and the critical thinkinglearning to identify which sources were reliable and how to select relevant information for their project.

Following this research, each student chose the ecosystem that most interested them to continue working on individually.

Organization of scientific ideas

Once the information was gathered, the students prepared a presentation in English with the key scientific ideas about their ecosystem. This task fostered written expression, content organization, and the appropriate use of scientific vocabulary in the foreign language.

Learning Communities

The project culminated in a day of Learning CommunitiesIn this event, the students became the hosts and experts. They invited classmates from other courses, prepared their oral presentations, and even managed the logistics of access, calculating and distributing the necessary tickets.

This final phase of the project was especially comprehensive, as it involved the actual use of English (speaking and listening), scientific work, and the application of mathematical skills to organize attendance and control capacity.

An example of active and integrated learning

“Ecosystems in Action!” has been an excellent opportunity to reinforce Plurilingual Competence and Science Competence, as well as to show how integrated content and language learning can motivate students and make them the protagonists of their own educational process.
