“The body” as a source of learning in the Early Years of Lope de Vega

The body has been the central theme of learning in the fourth integrated unit developed for the Early Years stage at Lope de Vega International School. Through it, the children's curiosity has been awakened, and this, naturally, has become an integral part of their learning process.

Senses, healthy habits, and bodily functions

In the first phase, the youngest students (3 years old) have recognized their body and its possibilities...in addition to the senses involved in their daily lives. Following this, the students of Four years have passed since they last reflected on the importance of acquiring healthy lifestyle habits in the present to enjoy good health in the future. Finally, the students of Five years have taken a journey through the interior of the body, knowing the different functions and processes that make it up.

Self-confidence

The children have been able to answer many of the questions generated by this center of interest, which is also ideal for acquiring development strategies regarding self-confidence and the recognition of needs, possibilities and limitations.

This unit has been filled with play, hands-on activities, and sensory exploration. We have also been able to enjoy the valuable collaboration from several healthcare professionals that have contributed to building learning through first-person experience.

In four years, the learning process regarding the body has focused on establishing relationships between it and the habits that promote well-being personal. In addition, special emphasis has been placed on sustainable and responsible habits and practices related to the nutrition, hygiene, rest and self-care.

Among the activities undertaken to learn about the body, the students observed and explored using different materials as well as their own bodies. They also reflected on the processes that occur within their bodies and resolved many questions that arose in their daily lives regarding this fascinating topic that always sparks so much curiosity. They particularly enjoyed interacting with students from other grade levels and with the visit from the healthcare professionals, an important part of the school community.
