As every year, the first and second grade students celebrated the feast of Saint Blaise by making their own traditional "Sant Blai Bun," a pastry associated with this festival which takes place on February 3rd. They spent the morning preparing the buns with the help of their teachers.
In the afternoon, the Chaplain, Father Francisco Javier, met with all the primary school students to bless the buns. They say that whoever eats a St. Blaise bun is protected against sore throats.
Who was Saint Blaise?
Saint Blaise, a physician and bishop in Turkey, saved the life of a child who was choking on a fishbone lodged in his throat. This miraculous healing is the origin of the custom of blessing throats on the saint's feast day, February 3rd, as well as blessing traditional buns.
