Jaime Cortés, a student at Lope de Vega International School (5th grade), has won an honorable mention in the 24th edition of the ABEAM Mathematical Photography Competition (Barcelona Association for the Study and Learning of Mathematics).
More than 250 schools and 30.000 students
The nationwide competition has seen the participation of over 250 schools and 30.000 students. Given the high level of participation, reaching the finals is a significant achievement.
Geometric transformations
Among other things, the competition organizers valued two geometric transformations present in Jaime's photograph. The image, titled "Reflection and Shadow of a Motorcycle," features a translation in the shadow and symmetries in the reflections projected onto the reflective surface. In the third image of the Instagram post, you can see how the organizers emphasized this during the awards ceremony.
Mathematical photography
Regarding mathematical photography, it's worth noting that it's a powerful tool for enhancing mathematics learning. Furthermore, the student is always the central figure, sharpening their mathematical vision and expressing it artistically. Therefore, ABEAM's proposal encourages teachers from all disciplines, both artistic and mathematical, to develop activities centered around mathematical photography.
Carmen Pérez González Mathematical Photography Contest
In addition to participating in national competitions, the Lope de Vega Theatre holds its own annual competition. This is the “Carmen Pérez González Mathematical Photography Competition.” This year, in its 5th edition, the competition focused on symmetry. The competition is being held at the Founders' Day of the School, celebrated every March 8th.
