“POTION”, acronym for SCIENTIFIC-MATHEMATICAL POSTER, is the name given to the scientific research work that has been developed during this first year of Lope de Vega International School Baccalaureate.
These directed research projects have displayed on a scientific poster measuring 1m x 0,8m. All of them were exhibited in the 1st year of Baccalaureate class itself.
Themes
The topics of the scientific posters have been very varied. Starting from the students' own curiosity, they have explored such thought-provoking and intriguing subjects as:
- The mathematics of a spider web
- Is the Earth getting thinner or fatter?
- How many atoms are there in the human body?
- Calculating the speed of a fly.
Results
The students, working independently but always guided by their teacher Javier Lozano, have achieved some very interesting and intriguing results. Here are some examples of these discoveries:
- There are more atoms in a human body than stars in the entire observable universe.
- The reason why it is so difficult to catch a fly is not its speed but its acceleration.
- Spiders prefer quadratic equations, although they can also weave quadratic equations.
